“Silicosis is a growing concern in the building and construction industry. Because symptoms aren’t imminent and can take many years to develop there is a tendency to forget that dust is deadly and Silicosis is irreversible. By simply investing in the right tools and equipment up front, contractors are taking the right steps to reduce silica exposure and therefore prevent themselves and their work mates from potentially developing Silicosis.”

The AS170 is an innovative masonry restoration saw. Its unique cutting technology reduces the amount of airborne dust when cutting as well as the risk of inhaling crystalline silica.

The AS170 can contribute up to a 77% reduction in respirable silica dust (Alan, E., Chaolong. Q., (2016) In-Depth Survey Report: Removing mortar with a powered saw. Ohio: NIOSH) when carrying out tasks such as heritage restoration, tuck pointing, toothing of brickwork and chasing. Unlike other masonry saws and grinders, the AS170 does not require the use of heavy duty, expensive face masks and suits to be compliant. This is largely because the innovative motion of the blades produces mostly larger dust particles. As a result these particles don’t become airborne and spread like that of angle grinders. This coupled with the Dust Boot makes it ideal for Heritage  Restoration Professionals and other Masonry Contractors looking to improve on-site safety and compliance.

There are plenty of jobs where establishing an accurate level or straight line makes all the difference. While optical surveying equipment may seem old-fashioned in this age of lasers and GPS location equipment, they are still very much in use, and incredibly handy for particular applications.

Laser levelling systems, both rotary and fixed, have made levelling quicker and easier, and have the added benefit of being a one-person operation. In this article we will look at the use of both laser and optical systems. While this article won’t teach you how to be a competent surveyor, it will show you how both systems work, and what applications they are best suited to.

In the lead-up to Christmas, we like to have a scout around some of our favourite tool stores to see what's new and interesting. Nothing says get in the workshop and fix something quite like new set of spanners, sockets or screwdrivers. All jokes aside, new and innovative tools hit the market all the time, and it can be tough staying abreast of the latest and greatest gear.

Most of us have little time for gimmickry, but the more reputable tool manufacturers have certainly improved the design of some tools such as multi-grips, locking pliers and ratchet spanners over recent years. Any tool which can be relied upon to tackle a range of jobs is a sure-fire toolbox favourite.

Just as it seems there is a specialist tool for most jobs these days, there is also a specialist drill bit for every kind of drilling job you could imagine.  If we listed every type of specialist drill bit, it would be a pretty long list, but a good knowledge of what drill bits are available when a tricky drilling job presents itself is a useful thing.

A good set of metric and imperial sized HSS twist drills will probably cover th emajority of drilling jobs, but did you know they can be custom sharpened for different materials?

Tools tend to get purchased in dribs and drabs, with new sets of spanner, sockets or screwdrivers replacing older sets, often with bits missing.  Toolboxes get upgraded, with larger units with extra storage capacity replacing smaller boxes.  But no matter how much space we have it never seems to be enough to lay out all tools in an orderly fashion so they can be located at a moments notice. If you are lucky enough to have a rainy day to spend in the workshop, there are a range of ways to better organise your tools, including custom inserts for your toolbox.

The standard in tool trays these days is EVA foam inserts, offered by manufacturers such as Kincrome.  This is all well and good if purchasing tools from new where the trays are included, but basically impossible to purchase a tray for pre-existing tools.
